Collection Scope and Content Note

The 1st Playable Productions records consist of game design documentation for 1st Playable games, including products for Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, LeapFrog, and more. The materials document all stages of the design process including art concepts, stories, characters, assets, user interface, milestone deliverables, weekly reports, build notes, manuals, submission documents, and more. The records were received in 3-ring binders organized by the project names assigned by 1st Playable Productions. Some projects also include CDs with digital versions of the documentation.

Though the donor has not transferred intellectual property rights (including, but not limited to any copyright, trademark, and associated rights therein) to The Strong, they have given permission for The Strong to make copies in all media for museum, educational, and research purposes.

Administrative History

1st Playable Productions, LLC is an independent game development studio focused on handheld games for children. The company was founded by CEO Tobi Saulnier in 2005 with former members of Vicarious Visions and is located in Troy, New York.

The 1st Playable Productions records consist of game design documentation, including products for Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, LeapFrog, and more. The material dates from 2006 to 2015.

System of Arrangement

The records are arranged alpabetically by 1st Playable assigned project names, with the published game title noted in brackets at the end of the folder title. The documents are arranged within their folders in the original order from the binders they were received in. The CDs are housed separately in boxes AV1 and AV2 and arranged alphabetically by project name.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The records were donated to The Strong as a gift of 1st Playable Productions and Tobi Saulnier and accessioned in May, 2024, under object no. 123.2472. The materials were received in 10 boxes in July, 2023.
