Letter from Augustus to Father, heading west

Abstract This letter, noted only from "Your affectionate son, Augustus" to his father, was written in 1849 as Augustus traveled to the western frontier of the United States. Writing from Missouri, the author details his provisions, livestock, and funds. It is possible that the letter-writer was heading to California as part of the 1849 California Gold Rush, following the famed Oregon Trail starting at Independence, Missouri.
