The Dorothy and Jerome Singer papers consist of material from the professional careers of noted play scholars Jerome and Dorothy Singer. The papers are comprised of research notes, reference materials, manuscripts, conference presentations, course lectures, and correspondence. Overview

This collection consists of material from the professional careers of noted play scholars Jerome and Dorothy Singer. The papers date from 1978 to 2009, with the bulk of materials dating from 1992 to 2007. The papers are comprised of research notes, reference materials, manuscripts, conference presentations, course lectures, and correspondence.

Biographical Note

Dorothy Singer (1927-2016) was a senior research scientist in the Department of Psychology at Yale University, as well as co-director of the Yale University Family Television Research and Consultation Center. She was a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. Her research and publications focus on early childhood development, television effects on youth, and parent training in imaginative play. She received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Teachers College at Columbia University and the Award for Distinguished Lifetime Contributions to Media Psychology from the American Psychological Association.

Jerome Singer (1924-2019) was a certified psychoanalyst through the William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, he pursued a full-time practice in New York City, while also holding a series of part-time research appointments. In 1963, he was recruited as a full professor and director of the clinical psychology training program for the City University of New York. In 1972 he became the director of clinical psychology training at Yale University, where he served as a professor for over four decades, and was co-director of the Yale University Family Television Research and Consultation Center. He was a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

In addition to co-directing the Yale University Family Television Research and Consultation Center for more than 30 years, Dorothy and Jerome were married for 67 years and had three children together.
