Lancy between 1975 and 1988. The gathering of this body of work, and the heavy annotations by the collector, David F. Lancy, document one scholar's approach to the literature and his efforts to synthesize material and theories found there.

Historical Note

John M. Roberts (1916-1990) was a pioneer in the field of cultural anthropology. One of the developers of the theory of creative expression, Roberts was part of a group of scholars who recognized that play was a microcosm of the "real world" in which adults and children undertook the the work of enculturation. With Brian Sutton-Smith, Roberts developed the theory of conflict enculturation to explain and describe this process. David F. Lancy is a contemporary scholar of both the significance of play and childhood. His work owes a deep intellectual debt to Roberts, as the annotations in the margins of Lancy's copies of Roberts' "classic" articles and the citations to Roberts' work in the Lancy-authored publications in this series attest. As such, this collection, aside from its intrinsic value as a collection of classic play scholarship, also documents the evolution of the field from 1959 through the 1980s.
